Lookouts

Lookouts tells the story of two queer outlaws who meet far from their gangs in a desert setting. The protagonists, both trans masculine characters, discover unexpected common ground and embark on a journey to scout a town rumored to hold gold. Through their adventure, they seek refuge in one another and glimpse the possibility of a better future together.

This visual novel contains approximately 45,000 words of narrative with a reading time of 5-6 hours, representing an expanded version of the original game created for the Gay Western Jam. The gameplay follows a traditional visual novel structure where players advance through dialogue by clicking or pressing spacebar, with the menu accessible via the top right corner. The experience blends Western frontier themes with intimate character development and romance.

The game includes content warnings for alcohol, smoking, gun violence with sound effects, gun death, blood, injury, mild transphobia, and discussions of racism and settler violence. While injuries are not described in graphic detail, the game includes visual elements and narrative allusions to these themes. The title combines character-driven storytelling with a historically-inspired setting to explore themes of identity, companionship, and hope.
